Tracking the hours behind my computer
My friends say I spend a lot of time behind the computer, and in fact it’s true. I work at an Internet Marketing company in the Netherlands and I have a passion for everything that has something to do with “online”. If somebody asks me what I do behind my computer I sum up some stuff like working, finding information and communicating. They often laugh at me and tell me I’m probably looking at porn all day! How else can you spend so much time behind your computer?
To keep track of how I spend my hours behind the computer I installed the Wakoopa tracker. You can see my profile here. The tracker is installed on my home computer (macbook) and therefore these numbers are not representative for all the hours I sit behind a computer. I’ll explain some of the programs I use often, so I never again have to explain what I’m doing behind my computer.
Firefox is by far the most used program on my Mac. From the moment I installed the Wakoopa tracker I have been using it for more then 100 hours. I prefer Firefox over every other browser because of the plugins that are available. Some of my favorite plugins are SearchStatus, SmartPagerank and Foxmarks synchronizer. I’ll write a post about these and more plugins soon.
To bad Wakoopa isn’t telling me what I use Firefox for (or maybe this is a good thing). You just have to believe me on my words. When I’m home I spend a lot of time reading blogs, so this is probably where a lot of these 100+ hours went to. Recently I discovered StumbleUpon and I have spend some hours playing with it. There are a lot of other websites I often visit,
but I think there’s one that deserves an honorable mention here.
I visit Google hundreds of times a day. Most of these times I’m googling for my work. The service I use most is Adwords, but I also use Analytics, Adsense, Webmaster Tools, Maps, iGoogle and I have a gmail address. You can say I’m professionally addicted to Google.
But lets go back to the data from the Wakoopa tracker. The second most used program on my computer is Mail, I used it for over 13 hours. It’s the best e-mail program I ever used; fast, easy and works great against spam. I also love it because it works perfectly together with all my other mac applications like iCall and Address Book. I think I don’t have to explain what I use Mail for. Some other Mac applications that are on my list with most used programs are: Finder, Preview and TextEdit. I just love all Apple product and can’t wait until Leopard is finished.
My Wakoopa list contains a lot of other programs (some I don’t even know). Here’s the top 10:
- Firefox (102 hours)
- Mail (13 hours)
- Parallels Desktop (4 hours)
- Microsoft Word (3,5 hours)
- Finder (3 hours)
- aMSN (3 hours)
- Entourage (3 hours)
- Fireworks (2 hours)
- Dreamweaver (2 hours)
- Safari (2 hours)
From now on, if somebody asks me what I’m doing behind my computer, I’ll just tell them to check my Wakoopa stats. And NO, I’m not watching porn all day!
