Mi ultimo semana
It’s my last week in Malaga. I have three more days at school and then I fly to Barcelona for the weekend. This morning I got a text message from Anne (Canadian student who left to Barcelona last Saturday) that she is in the same class as Rob (amigo de hollande who I am going to visit). It’s a small world after all! Rebeca (American chica) is also going to Barcelona this weekend so we can have a little Malaga reunion on Placa Catalunya.
After one week of “dutch weather” here in Malaga (no sun and a lot of rain) it’s finally getting better again. 26 Degrees and a nice blue sky and thats just the way I like it. For all the Spanish speaking people: Vamos a la playa….. oh oh ho ho ho. Hasta Luego!
A Spanish language course in Malaga
If you ever think of going to Malaga to study the Spanish language you should go to Malaga Plus. The school is situated in a district of Málaga called Pedregalejo, about 2km from the city center and less than 100 meters away from the beach. The city center can be easily reached and there’s a bus stop right next to the school. Near the beach you will find many bars and authentic fish-restaurants, as well as the school’s bar “La Tortuga” where a lot of students go to every night. (every Monday welcome party for the new students).
The school is located in four Andalusian villas with bright classrooms and a Mediterranean flare. Air conditioning is available in most of the classes. The rooftop terrace on top of the main building gives you the perfect opportunity to enjoy the sun with a terrific view of the mountains of Málaga. In order to keep in touch with home and friends the school provides access to the internet on more then 20 pc’s.
The school has a little shop where you can get coffee, fresh orange juice, sandwiches and all other kind of snacks. At the reception you can get information about Andalusia, excursions, renting cars etc.
Thats enough to promote my school for now! Actually one more thing; the teachers are really great!
My second weekend in Malaga (and Granada)
It’s 23.00 now, I still have to do my homework but first want to make a short summary of my weekend and upload some pictures. This posting is in English to please some of my fellow students, especially the crazy Canadian girls.
Lets start this summary with Thursday. In the evening there was a “beach party†for students from different schools in Malaga. All the students had to bring there own drinks to a special location on the beach. There was no music and lights so it pretty much looked like a “cumbaja†meeting with students sitting in circles. It was nice to see some people from other schools but I went home early because I have classes on Friday.
Friday-evening we made a barbecue at the beach just outside Malaga. The food wasn’t really good but we had a great time drinking, telling stories and enjoying the surrounding. Markus brought the little puppy dog Paco who was almost thrown in a dumpster by some Spanish children (long story). If you want to adopt this cute little 4 weeks old dog you can send me an email. Or maybe I’ll just bring him home….
On Saturday-morning Whitney left back home and I was quite sad because we were really close. We had a lot of fun these last two weeks talking about polar bears and stuff like that. Meeting all these new people from all over the world is definitely one of the best experiences here. After only two weeks I’m able to travel half the world invited to sleep on couches everywhere. On top of my countries-I-want-to-visit-list is Canada, so Calgary and T-dot be prepared.
That afternoon Jeroen (aka Jeronimo) invited me to join him and two girls from his host family to Grananda. We left Malaga around 15.00h and went to a cheap hostal close to la alhambra. The girls went shopping the moment we arrived and we went exploring the city. I was really impressed when I first saw the snowy tops of the Sierra Nevada while standing in the burning sun. Granada really is a beautiful city with nice tapas bars on almost every corner. If you order a drink in a bar you’ll get free tapas with it. If you order more drinks you will get different tapas and they get better with every drink you take.
In the morning I woke up at 07.30 to get tickets for la Alhambra. When I arrived at the ticket-office there already was a line of 250 people. After almost two hours I got the tickets and went back to our hostal to wake up Jeroen and the girls. We first went to the citycentre to have some breakfast and then went back to visit la alhambra. This “small village†was build many years ago and includes both muslim and christian architecture. The palace was the most impressive to see and we ran into Jeroen his neighbors from Holland when we were in it (it’s a small world). We were all really tired so we decided not to see the complete area and just left back to Malaga. Back home….
Wat vind jij van werken?
Mijn klas hier in Spanje bestaat uit 6 studenten (2 duitsers, 1 canadees, 1 pool, 1 australische en ik) en we hebben al dusdanig veel kennis van de Spaanse taal (yeah right) dat er van ons verwacht wordt dat we 2 uur per dag praten over een willekeurig onderwerp. Vandaag was het thema “werken”.
Ik hou van mijn werk (online marketing), vind het niet erg om dit 60 uur in de week te doen en heb veel ambities. Ik wil carrière maken en het zo ver mogelijk schoppen. Als 23 jarige student gaat dit mij tot op heden erg goed af en ik kijk erg positief naar de toekomst. Ik werk niet (alleen) voor het geld, mijn zelfontwikkeling vind ik hierbij minstens zo belangrijk. Ik heb echt plezier in mijn werk.
Allereerst moest ik een tekst als deze vertalen naar het Spaans, dit was al haast onmogelijk gezien ik zelf geen woordenboek heb meegenomen en die van mijn Duitse huisgenootje gebruik. Na flink wat puzzelen toch een aantal zinnen op papier kunnen krijgen die vertelde hoe ik tegen werken aan kijk.
Maar dit bleek niet het moeilijkste gedeelte te zijn van mijn betoog. Veel moeilijker was het namelijk om mijn Spaanse lerares te overtuigen van mijn visie ten opzichte van werk. Voor haar was het niet mogelijk dat je voor iets anders werkt dan geld, voor zelfontwikkeling of iets dergelijks kun je beter vrijwilligerswerk gaan doen. Ambities zijn voor haar een slechte eigenschap omdat dit stress als gevolg heeft. Ook was het erg moeilijk voor mij om duidelijk te maken dat ik echt plezier heb in mijn werk, voor haar is vrije tijd altijd leuker. En als laatste: “Waarom zou je 60 uur in de week werken als je genoeg verdient?”.
Een interessante discussie alleen werd ik belemmerd door mijn Spaanse woordenschat, het was in ieder geval erg leerzaam om op deze manier meer over de cultuur en mentaliteit van de Spanjaarden te weten te komen. To be continued…

Een korte update vanuit Malaga
Het weekend zit er weer op en de lessen zijn weer begonnen. Het weer is nu erg goed en ik heb dan ook al wat uurtjes op het strand doorgebracht. Het spaans praten gaat al wat beter al moet ik wel mijn huiswerk gaan maken, meer oefenen en een hoop woorden leren. Afgelopen maandag zijn er weer een aantal nieuwe studenten gekomen waaronder 2 nederlanders, toch wel fijn om af en toe in het nederlands te kunnen praten.
In het weekend heb ik de meest toeristische plaatsen in Malaga bezocht waaronder een erg mooi kasteel. Op dit moment zitten we de overige weekende al vol te plannen met excursies naar plaatsen die we willen bezoeken. Vooral de studenten uit Amerika en Canada zijn hier erg fanatiek in, ik vind het allemaal wel goed en kijk wel waar ik heen ga.
Het leven hier bevalt me wel erg goed al moet ik nog steeds wennen aan de tijden waarop iedereen gaat eten. Rond vier uur wordt er uitgebreid gegeten en dan ’s avonds weer rond een uur of tien. Een uitgebreide maaltijd om zes uur zit er hier niet in omdat alle restaurants dan dicht zijn.
Mijn internet werkt helaas niet meer goed in mijn appartement dus ik zit nu met mijn macbookje in een internetcafe. Even werken, mails checker en de nieuwe heroes aflevering downloaden die ik vanavond ga kijken.
